First things first: Which program?
If you are thinking of study abroad, as a UH Manoa student, you are open to choose from 2 programs:
1. STUDY ABROAD CENTER
2. MIX (Manoa International Exchange)
Both programs help you embark on your study abroad journey, but differ in some ways such as:
SCHOOLS & COUNTRIES OFFERED
Check out their websites (linked above) to see which countries and schools they offer.
*If you are a Shidler student, DEFINITELY check out this page to look at our partner schools.
There is a COURSE EQUIVALENCY LIST for each partner university. You should check this to look at what type of courses the university offers that will transfer back to UHM. This will help you choose the university you want to study abroad at!
TUITION
At the Study Abroad Center, you pay your partner university's tuition. They arrange your housing and meal plans for you as well.
With MIX, you just pay your UHM tuition. However, you will have to arrange your own housing and will not be provided with a meal plan.
These are only some of the differences so make sure to check out their websites and if you have more questions, arrange an appointment with their advisors to find out what's best for you!
MIX Application
I chose MIX, so if you plan on doing the same, keep on reading!
Applying for MIX starts off pretty early. If you want to study abroad during a:
- Deadline: December 1
- Deadline: May 1
*Keep in mind that the application opens ONE YEAR before you leave. For example, if you want to study abroad in Spring 2021, the application opens up on January 1, 2020.
What you need for the MIX Application:
The online application is fairly simple and doesn't take very long. However, you don't want to rush through it so make sure you give yourself enough time when you start it. The application will ask you for your top 3 choices of schools (although you can list up to 5 schools, only 3 is required), so make sure you have your research done on which schools you want to go to by then.
Once you get that done, congratulations, you're all done with applying to MIX! Just wait for MIX to send you an email regarding your nomination to see if you got the school you want!
*For reference, I turned in my application around March 2019 to study abroad in Spring 2020 and got my nomination to my first choice (yay!) about July.
