How To Apply for a Korean Visa
Congratulations for being one step closer to your study abroad! Once you get your admission packet from your partner university, you can go to get your visa (required if you are staying for more than 90 days). The steps to get your visa in order to study in Korea is simple, but be sure you have all the documents ready beforehand so that you'll experience a smooth process at the consulate!
Here are the documents you need:
COMPLETED VISA APPLICATION
This can be found here in a PDF that you can print out or you can go to the consulate where they have copies. If you can, I recommend printing it out and filling it out beforehand so you can finish this whole process quicker!
PASSPORT PHOTO
I got mine taken at the UH Campus Center and apparently the background was "gray" and not white like it should be, but the lady at the consulate was nice and said it was okay. SO try to make sure the background is white (if you can of course because I couldn't). I saw a photo booth for passport photos at the consulate so if worse comes to worse and you forget, I think you can get it done there. However, try to get it done beforehand because it never hurts to BE PREPARED.
VALID PASSPORT
Note: If you have dual citizenship (ex: I have both US and Japanese citizenship), make sure you bring both of your passports because they'll ask for both.
OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT
Make sure its official (so it should be sealed) and that it is your most recent one.
ADMISSIONS LETTER
Just bring your whole admission packet just in case!
CERTIFICATE OF BANK BALANCE
I brought my Freeman scholarship award letter for this, but also brought my bank statement just in case. The lady took both, so maybe you should bring both just in case the award letter isn't enough.
$45 CASH
They only accept the $45 by CASH or MONEY ORDER. Make sure you remember this!
Overall, the process went by really fast and asides from waiting for a few minutes, I was out of there within 5 minutes. I even got compliments for being so prepared! Therefore, I recommend that you go there prepared with all these documents. They take copies of the admission packet and your certificate of bank balance and give you back the originals. They do take your passport which they give back to you with the visa in about 10 BUSINESS DAYS so make sure you get this done when you don't need your passport during the period they hold on to it. Good luck!!
